Oak, walnut, ash or birch. Samples are sent by post if you'd like.

You see a proof on the actual grain before anything is cut.

Cut, sanded, engraved and oiled in the studio, one at a time.

Wrapped in unbleached paper and sent, ready to be given.
Materials
Four woods, no two alike.
Wood is sourced in small quantities from Danish and northern European mills. Knots, colour shifts and grain movement are kept, not sanded away.
Oak
Open, honest grain that darkens slowly. Engraving reads clearly against it.
Walnut
Deep and warm, with figure that shifts from board to board. The quietest of the four.
Ash
Pale and straight-lined. Light, strong, and forgiving under fine detail.
Birch
Almost creamy, with small marks left by the tree. No two pieces match.
The making
Six quiet steps.

Selection
Boards are chosen for grain direction, not for uniformity.

Cutting
Each blank is cut slightly oversized and left to settle.

Sanding
Four grits by hand, until the edge stops catching the skin.

Engraving
Your design is set on the grain, then burned at low depth.

Finishing
A plant-based oil, two coats, buffed between each.

Packaging
Unbleached paper, linen thread, a handwritten card.

The studio
Made by hand, one piece at a time.
Anelia Holm works from a small studio outside Aarhus, in a room with one long bench and a window facing north.
She began by engraving her grandmother's handwriting onto a bookmark. It felt like keeping something that was about to disappear — and that is still the reason for most of what leaves the studio.
Everything is made in small batches, by her, in the order it was asked for.
